The Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR) has recently been adopted by the EU. What are the implications for farmland areas and the research we do on them? And what are the implications for the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)?

Both policies represent key pillars within the EU policy landscape, forming the basis of some of the most important legislation for biodiversity conservation and research at the European level. Looking ahead, these policies will continue to evolve, with transformation and implementation taking place at both EU and member state levels and the scientific community still has a vital opportunity to contribute to shaping their future impact.

This Info Hour comprises two introductory talks, one about the CAP and one about the NRR, from two experts on these policies. We will then open the floor for questions and answers, and an open discussion, with a broader panel of members in an evolving NRR-CAP expert group.

About the speakers

Sebastian Lakner is leading the chair for Agricultural Economics at the University of Rostock. He focuses on policy analysis of the EU's 'Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)'. Furthermore, he is investigating organic farming as farming system and analysing the agri-environmental programmes in the EU.

Evelyn Underwood works at the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), focusing on the implementation of EU biodiversity policies. Evelyn led IEEP’s work on the evaluation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, on agricultural policy and management and Natura 2000, and the evidence reviews of IEEP’s evaluation of the biodiversity impacts of the Common Agricultural Policy.

Guy Pe’er is group lead of Agriculture and Ecosystems at iDiv and UFZ. In the projects AgriDiv, CAP4GI, Agroecology-TRANSECT and LAFERIA his group focuses on the EU's Common Agricultural Policy, the Nature Restoration Restoration and the Green Deal as a whole, asking how European policies can help expand good agroecological practices, to benefit farmers, nature and (rural) society.

Marie Vandewalle is strongly involved in science-policy-society interfaces at EU level and coordinates the EU networks BioAgora and Alternet. Marie has recently been invited to join the EU Biodiversity Platform as an expert for the subgroup on the EU Nature Restoration Regulation.

Néstor Fernandez is currently leading a team of the European Topic Centre for Biodiversity and Ecosystems (ETC-BE) Consortium, supporting the implementation of EU biodiversity legislations. His team recently developed the uniform format of the Nature Restoration Plans serving the EU’s Nature Restoration Regulation.
