Fourth Workshop on Co-Innovation Brings Together Innovation Hubs to Advance Agroecology

From 3-6 June, the Agroecology-Transect project hosted its fourth Workshop on Co-Innovation in Sofia, Bulgaria. This vibrant gathering brought together scientists, experts and facilitators from  our 11 Innovation Hubs across Europe, to collaborate on advancing agroecological transformations.

During the workshop, participants explored the narrative of agroecology through the eyes of actors and farmers embedded in their respective innovation hubs. They shared the latest research findings from the project and engaged in fruitful discussions about the current policy landscape. A key focus was defining collective policy asks to support sustainable agroecological transitions, addressing pressing challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and socio-economic sustainability.

Butterfly monitoring

Gaitan dancers, Godech

On Wednesday 4 June, the group travelled to the Godech, home to the Bulgarian Hub's main activities. There, members of the project joined ecologists and local farmers to identify indicator plant species following methodologies designed for implementing agri-environmental payments that promote biodiversity conservation. The workshop also showcased practical techniques for monitoring butterflies, newly recognized as an important indicator species under the EU Nature Restoration Regulation.

Farmers Pavlin Antonov, Stefan Vlasakiev, Katina Dimitrova, and Borislav Borisov generously shared their experiences with extensive grazing practices that support agro-environmental sustainability. These on-the-ground insights enriched the collective understanding of practical agroecological approaches.

The visit concluded with a warm celebration at the Forest Houses complex, where participants enjoyed traditional local specialties. The children's dance ensemble "Gaitan" from the local community centre in Godech delighted the group with traditional dances from the folklore of Western Stara Planina, highlighting the deep cultural connections that underpin sustainable rural development.

This workshop exemplified the power of collaboration and knowledge exchange in driving forward agroecological innovation and policy advocacy across Europe.
